This is the most amazing sport that I have ever experienced. In the words of the famous climber George Mallory, "What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.” Kiting can be that adventure. Why choose Complete Kite Boarding for lessons?
At Complete Kite Boarding you will be taught by a patient, professional, safety conscious instructor with nearly twenty years of experience. We are the only kite boarding school in Maui that values your safety enough to use five line kites and two way radios. Avoid the bait and switch. Many schools attempt to legitimize themselves by showing pictures or videos of pro's that may have worked for them for a special event. After you book a lesson, you will find that they pair you with a novice in an instructor's shirt. We have worked at many schools that regularly employed instructors that could not tune their gear, relaunch their kite, water-start or stay upwind. Often when you take golf or tennis lessons, you go with a pro. You wouldn't pay for lessons from a golf hack or tennis lessons from novice. You will learn more and progress faster from a trained, professional kite board instructor. Choose a teacher that understands how to teach. How long does it take to learn? Most beginners start by taking nine hours of lessons, three hours per session. These lessons can be spread out over days or even years. Nine hours should give you enough time to cover and internalize the basics needed to keep yourself and others around you safe. But everyone is different. More often than not, people need more time to be comfortable on their own on the water; it is rare that enough competency to respond correctly to a problem can be achieved in less than nine hours of instruction. Our goal is for you to understand how to kite board. Each step you learn leads to the next step. You are building a foundation and creating good habits. It takes more than one day to learn how to move, think and react like an experienced kite boarder. Think of learning to kite board as learning a foreign language--do not expect to be fluent in a few lessons. We hope that you are interested in safely approaching and excelling at a sport that you may enjoy for the rest of your life. (We are not a company that tells you that they will have you on a board in the first day. We are not going to lie to you to make a sale. We respect you, the sport and innocent bystanders enough to not put you in a position to recklessly hurt yourself and/or others. This is one of the ways the sport has garnered a bad reputation). How long is a lesson? Lessons are usually 2 to 3 hours long. If conditions degrade, we can end early. For the most part we prefer not to teach longer than 3 hours as people's mental and physical abilities tend to fade. The goal is to keep you at your optimal performance level. We want you to progress quickly and easily. We want you to be a competent and safe kite boarder. Book a lesson. What will I learn? You will be learning how to control a wind powered engine. Like most vehicles, you learn to start, stop, go faster, go slower, change directions and what to do when something goes wrong. For many people, flying a kite is not intuitive because giving exact same input on the control bar will give different results depending on many conditions. Taking lessons will help you understand how to fly a kite. Please understand that kite boarding, like many worthy pastimes, is not something that is learned in one day. Take your time. Sometimes you will learn more from taking time off and subconsciously digesting what you have learned. Proceed at your own pace because comfort breeds confidence. Soon you will have the familiarity with a kite to know what to do, how to do it and when to do it. Over time you will learn how to keep track of what the kite is doing, what the bar is doing, what your board is doing, what the wind is doing, what the water is doing, where you are going and what is going on around you. You will learn to recognize if something is going wrong and how to correct it. You will have the kite control avoid putting yourself or others at risk. So, please give yourself time to learn and digest what you have learned. Feel free to take a day off. You are not in a hurry, as you can enjoy kiting for the rest of your life. During the lessons, We like to tell you what we are going to do, show you how to do it and then have you copy what we just did. While doing this we will use different length lines to limit the power of the kite. Also we will use different size kites to scale the power to what is necessary to accomplish the task. In other words, we limit your exposure to risk while you are developing your kite control skills. Ideally you should be able to make mistakes without much consequence. The more mistakes you make the more you will learn. Each skill you learn will help you accomplish the next skill. Soon you will be multi-tasking and keeping track of what the bar is doing, what the kite is doing, what your hands are doing, what your body is doing, what your eyes are doing, what your board is doing and you might as well pay attention to where you are going. It may sound like a lot, but we believe you can do it! And...just in case you forget, we'll have a two way radio on you while you are in the water so we can talk you through each step. Can I learn to kite in one day? No. To quote the memory scientist Eric Kandel, "long term memory typically requires repeated, spaced training with intervals of rest." Over the years we have obliged people who convinced us that they can train for 5 or 8 hours at a time. Their abilities declined, as did mine. We were not successful. We understand this goes against "your friend's" story that they learned to kite in a day. We believe if you probe a little deeper you will find that they were a liability on the beach and walked up the beach for three months or a year before they really figured it out how to kite board. We believe they may have also forgot to mention how many times they needed (and still need) to be rescued. There is just too much to learn and internalize for a person to learn to kite safely in one day. There seems to be some schools that try to sell you that idea so they can make a sale. If you decide to learn to kite with them, you will find that you will be an accident waiting to happen. You will learn what a "kitemare" is. What can I do to speed up the learning process? 1. Become proficient in flying a 2-line kite. 2. Become proficient in flying a 4-line kite. 3. Become comfortable in the water by learning other water sports such as surfing, free diving or stand up paddle boarding. 4. Learn other wind powered sports such as wind surfing or sailing 5. Learn other board sports such as snowboarding or skateboarding and be able to ride regular foot and goofy foot. 6. Learn how to comfortably swim the backstroke for a distance. Each of the above skills takes time and practice to acquire. Learning to kiteboard will also take time and practice. Most people will take a minimum of 9 hours of kiteboarding lessons. This will cover the basics. An average person will spend approximately 15 to 30 hours of flying a 4-line kite before they are comfortably riding back and forth in control, staying upwind and making nice turns. Kiteboarding in one day should not be your goal. Not injuring yourself so you can kite tomorrow may be a better goal to set. As you are learning, any distraction, lapse of focus, inadvertent bar pressure or change in the wind could throw you. It's best to go with a school that uses small 2 or 4m kites so serious injury can be avoided. (If you went to a school that gave you a kite big enough to lift and throw you on the first day, ask for your money back). Wanting to learn to kite in one day is similar to wanting to put on a wing suit and jump off a cliff after a few hours. There is a very small chance that you might succeed. There is a far greater chance that things will not go as planned. Be realistic. It takes time and practice to learn many of the things that are worthwhile. Enjoy the journey! __________________________________________________________ 24 Hour Notice Cancellation PolicyIf the wind or weather conditions are not worthwhile, we will cancel at no expense to you.
When a lesson time is reserved, it is held for you. Other clients may have been turned away for that time. We request that you give us a 24 hour notice of cancellation. This allows the opportunity for someone else to book that lesson time. Please understand that kite board instructors only get paid when they instruct. Missed appointments result in lost wages and prevent other clients from being taken care of. Therefore, the total amount of lesson scheduled will be charged for clients whom fail to cancel their appointment without 24 hour notice. We understand that unanticipated events occasionally happen in everyone’s life. In such cases, your instructor may override our cancellation policy.
