Kite Boarding Lesson: how to slow down when you are over powered.
If you think you can keep things under control:
sheet the bar out, edge harder upwind to the left if you are going left, place about 90% of your weight on your back heel, push the bar away from your hips, you can aim all of your toes towards shore and both heels angled toward the tail of your board, slowly lower your kite so the left wing tip is just above the water and come back to shore to get a smaller kite.
If you feel your kite is generating more and more power and you think you are getting out of control:
with your back knee bent and 70-90% of your weight on your back foot, bear off down wind by progressively edging less and slowly aiming the nose your your board towards your kite, push your bar out away from your hips while sitting down and away from your kite. After collecting yourself, place your kite at 1 or 11 and just pull in the bar to stand up. Keep the kite at 1 or 11, lean way back, place your back hand towards the center of the bar, keep sheeting out and use your /front hand to "hold onto the water" or drag in the water behind you and kite directly back to shore or down wind to a safe landing area.
There is something to be learned from every instructor. This article goes into good detail about slowing down when you are overpowered. You can tell that this is experience talking:
